Girls' Night In: Craft, Cakes and Cocktails by Hannah Read-Baldrey

This week I'm reviewing Girls' Night In: Craft, Cakes and Cocktails by Hannah Read-Baldrey, published by Quadrille Publishing with photography by ©Tiffany Mumford & Verity Welstead. Hannah is a successful props and fashion stylist whose work has appeared in leading international publications such as Vogue, Elle, Red and Cath Kidston magazine. I chose to review this book as I loved Hannah's co authored book, Everything Alice! Last month I attended the launch party of Girls' Night In at Hannah's super stylish home where we drank cool cocktails and ate the most amazing dishes, my favourite being the baked brie barrel with honey and caramelised nuts. I was so in awe of her fabulous tile splashback...




Girls' Night In: Craft, Cakes and Cocktails, Hannah's first solo book is a super stylish, enchanting collection of unique craft projects, tasty treats, delicious cocktails, hilarious party games and simple pampering instructions for hair, nails and make-up.

The book starts with advice hints and tips on party preparation including crafty tutorials to help you make your own invitations and decorations to help you set the scene. The book is then split into three main chapters, starting with Craft Projects. Here you will find a fabulous selection of girly treasures to be made over a good natter, a glass of something nice and a cake or two. From pretty bow knickers, floral felt fascinators to a super stylish bunting necklace all of which are beautifully photographed and styled with accompanying easy to follow clear instructions and photographed instructions, including templates where necessary.

The second chapter Boudoir Beauty is full of a whole range of wonderful treats for pampering you and your friends. Starting with how to master the effortless chic french plait, create a modern wrap beehive and create a vintage roll. There are homemade spa treatments like the relaxing avocado and banana face mask and lavender salt hand scrub. Make up ideas devised with the help of Hannah's close friend and celebrity make up artist Fiona Fletcher and beautiful nail designs created by rising star Lucy Pearson.

In the third chapter Savvy Savouries, Sweet Treats & cocktails Hannah shares a varied selection of great party food recipes from a rustic pizza with crunchy colesaw, movie night savoury popcorn to the fabulous looking peaches and cream ruffle cake. A whole host of cocktail recipes including a fabulous Sweet Shop collection that includes a rhubarb and custard, cookies and cream and a popcorn marini!

Girls' Night In: Craft, Cakes and Cocktails is a super practical book brimming with stunning ideas. At a recommended price of £16.99, I think this book is a must for those who want to delight their guests with easy yet delectable food and drinks, as well as giving each of them the opportunity to create beautiful and quirky craft makes that they can take home and treasure!

Pretty Pastel Style by Selina Lake

This week I'm reviewing Pretty Pastel Style by Selina Lake, from illustrated lifestyle publishers Ryland Peters & Small and CICO Books. Selina Lake is a freelance interior & lifestyle stylist based in London, and has featured in many magazines and catalogues. Selina is also the author of 'Romantic Style' and best selling 'Homespun Style', both shot with photographer, Debi Treloar. I chose to review this her latest book as I adore pastels and I love Selina's style!

Pretty Pastel Style, decorating interiors with pastel shades is about decorating with pastels in a new modern way. Featuring inspiring homes from around the world, illustrating the fresh direction these subtle colours are taking, from rooms painted top to bottom in layers of muted tones to understated spaces, where soft pastel hues can be found in everything from vintage china to a state of the art oven.

The book is split into three main chapters, starting with how to combine the "Elements" of modern pastels, vintage pastels, handmade pastels and simple pastels. In this chapter Selina shows us how modern pops of neon invigorates pastels, layers of chalky hues give depth and how saturated shades mixed with pastels give a sophisticated feel.

The second chapter "Details" Selina covers colour palettes and patterns and shows us how pastels don't need to be girlie or frivolous but can be pale and interesting and superbly versatile, whether you introduce them in bold blocks or simply dotted around for splashes of pretty, witty colour. How furniture and lighting are basic ingredients of any room but as well as being practical they can also be pastel-pretty with a simple coat of paint. How to incorporate pastel fabric from cheerful ginghams, faded chintz or retro repeats and whimsical ways to display flowers. In display and decoration Selina shares ways to display ceramics, sketches and how moving collections around can quickly give your room a new feel.

In the third chapter "Spaces" Selina reveals how pastel shades can be used to bring today's modern interiors to life in spaces for cooking and eating, living and relaxing, sleeping and bathing, children's spaces, creative workspaces and outdoor living! From a chic modern kitchen that has been softened with easy, breezy pretty pastels to living rooms with dusky, cheeky and muted pastel tones that add personality. To softened pretty pastels that create a perfect soothing atmosphere in the bedroom and mellow hues that bring playfulness to the functional space of a bathroom.

At a recommended price of £19.99, I think this hardback book is a great buy as the modern use of pastels in textures, patterns and styles in each room is just so inspirational and is full of beautiful photographs!

Everything goes with Ice cream by Koralee Teichroeb

Everything goes with Ice cream is the fabulous new book by my friend Koralee Teichroeb, creator of the very popular and truly gorgeous blog Bluebird Notes.

"Baking and creating has always been a part of Koralee Teichroeb's life. Many childhood hours spent in her Grandma's kitchen is where it all began. There are also fab tutorials on making a tea cup pin cushion, tea cup planter and tea cup candles. Koralee also shares how to make your own sprinkles in any colour you desire!



Next up is Festive where Koralee welcomes blue skies and sunshiny festive days with blissfully delightful treats like the fabluous hot pink coloured Blueberry bombe seen on the front cover. Tutorials on making pom pom garlands, heartfelt button covers and sweet treat recipes for meringue heart cookies and Coconut ice. Then it is time to put on an extra sweater and get cozy with festive Autumn treats like Pumpkin ice cream sandwich cookies, candy apples and make knitted bowl covers. To brighten up the shortest and coldest days of the year with merry treats Koralee and friends share the prettiest peppermint bark recipes, cutest marshmallow snowmen on sticks and cranberry pistachio ice cream chateaus.








From there we move to Rich, a chapter on full-bodied flavour with yummy goodness. Recipes include a "Cup of Joe" ice cream cake, mint ice cream minis, Mom's rich marshmallow fudge and decadent cream cookie pie. There are the prettiest tutorials on making hot cocoa giveaway jars, cupcake garlands and frilled aprons.

In Ripe Koralee and friends celebrate the heavenly indulgences and sweetness of freshly picked fruits with recipes for a red raspberry sorbet, strawberry curd, rhubarb strawberry crisp and a lemon blueberry ice cream pie. This chapter also has some great tutorials on making beaded spoons and strawberry pin cushions.

Handheld is for perfectly sized treats to hold in your hands to eat; no spoon required. Here you will find recipes for peanut butter bar ice cream sandwiches on sticks, strawberry shortcakes on a stick and red bean ice cream bars. In this chapter you will also find my Eton mess ice cream cone recipe with a tutorial on making pretty cone wrappers...






In Simple Koralee and her daughters share fast and easy but oh so pretty recipes that will have everyone thinking you have been slaving over them for hours like the amazing looking Neapolitan ice cream cake, ice cream pizza, S'more bar milkshakes, and mini ice cream cups.

Next up is Adorn which is a chapter full of great ideas on ways to adorn and decorate your Ice Cream treats from sugared flowers to dipped fruit.

Last but not least is A Cozy Goodnight, for all things snugly & delightfully comfy. Here you will find tutorials on embellishing your own pillowcases and a yummy sounding marshmallow vanilla milkshake recipe.

This week I'm reviewing Bazaar Style: Decoratiing with Market and Vintage Finds by Selina Lake, from illustrated lifestyle publishers Ryland Peters & Small and CICO Books. Selina Lake is a freelance interior & lifestyle stylist based in London, and has featured in many magazines and catalogues. Selina is also the author of 'Romantic Style' and best selling 'Homespun Style', both shot with photographer, Debi Treloar. I chose to review this her first book as it has recently been re published in a Paperback version and I love Selina's style!

Bazaar Style: Decorating with Market and Vintage Finds is a about mixing vintage and retro home accessories and furniture, re-purposing objects, textiles and furniture to create a fantastic home that is full of colour, texture and charm.

The book is split into two main broad chapters, starting with how to combine the "Elements" of the style to put the look together. In this chapter Selina covers furniture and storage, textiles, colour and pattern, lighting, wall art and collectables and display. In furniture and storage we learn that Bazaar style is about finding furniture that has seen a bit of life and has the personality to prove it. In textiles we learn the trick is to team a variety of textiles together to create a visual and sensual mix and how to use colour and pattern beautifully.

The second chapter "Rooms"shows how the achievable style works brilliantly in Cooking and Eating Spaces, Living Spaces, Bathing Spaces, Sleeping Spaces and Outdoor Living. This chapter is full of insightful ways to build rooms so they are fit for purpose in the mew modern way we live our lives. Take the kitchen for example that used to be purely for cooking and the dining area only for eating but nowadays busy families and confident cooks prefer to gather in one place to eat, chat, work and relax. It is about simple taking the things you love and creating a home that is truly yours.

This week I'm reviewing Flea market chic, the thrifty way to create a stylish home by Liz Bauwens and Alexandra Campbell, from illustrated lifestyle publishers Ryland Peters & Small and CICO Books. Liz Bauwens is a freelance stylist whose work has appearded in Country Homes & Interiors, Good Housekeeping and House and Garden. Alexandra Campbell is a writer whose work has appeared in national magazines and newspapers including The Times Magazine, Financial Times and Independent and her novels written under the name of Nina Bell include The Empty Nesters, Lovers & Liars. Flea market chic, the thrifty way to create a stylish home explains how to create the look and what else is required to create the look in your own home. I chose to review this book as love a bit of flea market chic!

"Flea market chic is the new, smart way to decorate, adding texture, colour and depth to contemporary interiors. In modern rooms, a distressed chair or a vintage mirror add a perfect touch. And in traditional decorating schemes, flea market chic is a key part of the mix: faded textiles, weathered furniture, mis-matched china, and the occasional flamboyant lamp or art are all part of the charm"

After an introduction to what "flea market style" is and the different terminology used around the world to describe garage sales, car boot sales and yard sales. The book is split into six chapters starting with "flea market details". In this chapter they cover details like fabrics, frames and mirrors, vases and storage.

In the second chapter "flea market town" we see the almost entirely flea-market decorated city apartment of hairdresser Kim. A small apartment near Portobello with a modern eclectic living room, a classic contemporary dining area and an unashamedly feminine bedroom with a glamorous gilt boudoir atmosphere. In the third chapter "flea market country" we visit interior designer Henny Tate's kitchen that is full of reclaimed and reused pieces like the delightful mismatched chairs all painted in a lovely shade of turquoise. Her charming living room that is full of texture using a combination of new and old chairs. In this chapter there are also some great buying and transformation tricks like how to transform bedroom furniture with a lick of paint. In the fourth chapter "flea market modern" they cover the misconception that if you decorate your home with vintage and flea-market furniture you'll end up with a traditional or old-fashioned look. Here wee see the gorgeous home of Zoe Ellison founder of i gigi, a fashion and retail store in Brighton, whose home is a perfect example of a very contemporary vintage style. Her home is in a beautiful colour palette of muted earthy tones in a stunning mix of textures from plush velvet cushions to a handmade seashell chandelier. "collectors' flea market"

Next up is "collectors' flea market" highlighting the benefits of looking for collections of items like kitchenalia, and how many collectors tune into the power of swapping.
In the last chapter "flea Market outside" we see pretty houseboats, gardens sheds, converted wagons and gardens all given the flea market chic make over!

At a recommended price of £19.99, I think this hardback book is a inspiring, practical guide to creating an imaginative, stylish home!

Shabby Chic Inspirations & Beautiful Spaces by Rachel Ashwell

This week I'm reviewing Shabby Chic Inspirations & Beautiful Spaces by Rachel Ashwell, from illustrated lifestyle publishers Ryland Peters & Small and CICO Books. Rachel Ashwell is a self-made business woman who founded the iconic brand known as Shabby Chic in 1989. Rachel's love of vintage and flea-market finds is comfortable, relaxed and reassuringly achievable. I chose to review this book as I love Rachel's style "the beauty of imperfection".

Shabby Chic Inspirations & Beautiful Spaces is a lovely insight into Rachel Ashwell's world that is beautiful as it is comfortable, as inspring and spontaneous as it is practical and personal.

The book is split into fourteen sections, starting with an "Introduction" into Rachel's world. In this chapter Rachel talks eloquently and fondly about her inspirations from Beatrix Potter's Hill Top house to movies like Wuthering Heights. How she is open to exploring new ways to express her stories with darker palettes that our richer in depth and with a beauty she would not have been open to in the past.

From there Rachel's interior story begins with "Texas Belle" in which Rachel tells how she transformed The Outpost into The Prairie. Here Cowboy country frills sit perfectly side by side with Marie Antoinette inspired delicate French gilded wood. All of course which is accompanied by pages and pages of beautiful images showcasing the beautiful "Prairie".

Next up is "Timeworn Elegance" which shows the stylish London home of her friend, interior designer and stylist Sera Hersham Loftus. It's Where rock 'n' roll meets comfortable family home with shimmery floorboards, shabby frills and tarnished bits of bling.
"My Year in Notting Hill" covers Rachel's time in London when she opened her store and made a temporary home in the same neighbourhood. "The Brighter Shades of Pale" is a glimpse into her top director of music videos and childhood friend Sophie Muller's house that has pops of faded raspberry tones and turquoise walls.
"Glamour and Bling" is a sneak peak into Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne's Californian home that is a blend of rock 'n'roll and Hollywood glamour that shimmers with diffused light.
In "Bliss on the Beach" we go back to a Rachel Aswell property, this time it's a quirky beach shack in Malibu that is furnished in a washed out colour palette with unexpected hearts, pearls and beads. In "A Life that Designed a House" Rachel visits the home of Brendan McBreen who designed and built a minimal meets country barn in Malibu. Brendan and his wife Jeanne have worked with Rachel at Shabby Chic for over 20 years so inevitably there house is full of a lifetime of Shabby Chic fabrics and bed linens. In "Handmade with Love" Rachel returns to London to share the unique houseboat home of crafty designer, photographer and stylist Emma Freemantle who makes customised bicycles wrapped in scraps of fabric, feathered headdresses, banners and corsages. Remaining in London Rachel then shares the authentically vintage home of artists James Russel and Hannah Plumb who live in a delightful "Petit Palace". From there Rachel heads out into the countryside to visit "Pearl's Place" which is owned by fashion designer Pearl Lowe and her Supergrass drummer husband Danny Goffrey. Then Rachel returns to London in "Shabby Man" to visit designer and stylist Huw Griffiths artful London townhouse. Rachel then heads back over the pond to share the tiny romantic gingerbread cottage on the edge of a wood in the New York Catskill Mountains in the "The Shabby Shack".
In the last section "Living Art" Rachel shares her inspiring moodboards.

Shabby Chic Inspirations & Beautiful Spaces by Rachel Ashwell is an awe inspiring hardback book full of beautiful photographs of some of the loveliest unique Shabby Chic homes. At a recommended price of £25.00, I think this hardback book is a must have for all of us that love the iconic Shabby Chic style!

The Balcony Gardener by Isabelle Palmer

This week I'm reviewing The Balcony Gardener by Isabelle Palmer, from illustrated lifestyle publishers Ryland Peters & Small and CICO Books. Isabelle Palmer has created a successful business from her ability to enliven any balcony, roof terrace or window sill with her inventive gardening ideas and is the founder of The Balcony Gardener, an innovative online boutique that I featured here on 'shops i love'. I chose to review this book as I love her gardening boutique.

The Balcony Gardener is a book about being creative with the outdoor space you have, be that a window sill, balcony or roof terrace. However confined, Isabelle shows you how to make the most of what you have in the open air of the country or the hub of a city.

The book is split into five main chapters, starting with "The Basics". In this chapter Isabelle outlines the basic techniques you need to start balcony gardening, starting with the essential kit you need, and moving on to choosing and preparing pots and planting containers for your outdoor space. There are also guides and tips on choosing colours, plus seasonal and aftercare of your plants.

The second chapter "Urban Spaces" is a well presented selection of Isabelle's interesting themes and decorative ideas you can draw on to create your own outdoor escape to sit back and relax in. One of the included ideas is the Country Garden, inspired by lush meadows and wild flowers, a pretty butterfly, bee window box and a rippling splashing water garden.

The third chapter "Creative Recycling" is, as the title suggests, about getting creative with a variety of different recycled containers from old cans to metal crates. Isabelle shows you how to plant and create a salad box in a vintage wooden crate, how to turn a birdcage into a planter, and an old pallet into a wall planter.

The fourth chapter "All Things Edible" is about growing your own vegetables, fruits and herbs in a well thought out way. So for those that like delicious fruity drinks in the summer there is the stylish cocktail window box full of mint and strawberries. For the foodie there is the herb window box for fish, planted with curly-leaf parsley, lemon thyme and dill. Each window box idea also includes a helpful recipe.

The last chapter "Enjoying Your Balcony" is about doing exactly that! After mastering your outdoor planting it's time to add fun finishing touches like mood lighting and accessories, choose your garden furniture and make hanging votive candles. All of which Isabelle explains how to do.

The Balcony Gardener by Isabelle Palmer is a great hardback book full of great tips, ideas and inspiration to get you gardening. At a recommended price of £14.99, I think this hardback book is a good buy as it is has so many great tips for the first-time gardener and lots of inspiration for those who already have green fingers.

Everything Alice: The Wonderland Book of Makes by Hannah Read-Baldrey & Christine Leech

This week I'm reviewing Everything Alice: the Wonderland Book of Makes by Hannah Read-Baldrey & Christine Leech. Hannah is a successful props and fashion stylist whose work has appeared in leading international publications such as Vogue, Elle, Red and Cath Kidston magazine. Christine is a trained illustrator with over 15 years experience designing and art directing magazines, including Buzz, New Woman, Marie Claire, Look and ASOS. Three years ago the avid crafters met whilst working on the newly launched HobbyCraft magazine, and they have been working together ever since. I chose to review this book as I love all things Alice, especially the Mad Hatters Tea Party!

Everything Alice is a super stylish, enchanting collection of fifty craft projects to make, bake and decorate all in the theme of Lewis Carroll's novel, Alice in Wonderland.

The book starts by meeting the creative authors: "This book began as a little idea – a little idea hatched within an ordinary conversation over a cup of tea. We were having a chat – standing at the bottom of a staircase in a location house, which was dressed up for Christmas Day, even though it was July – and simultaneously we both exclaimed, 'How we would love to make a craft book with the theme of Alice In Wonderland.' Everything Alice is our first book (one of many, hopefully...) and we couldn’t be prouder!" They then go on to explore Lewis Carroll's past at Oxford University in the fun form of 'On The Trail of Alice'.

After being given a list of essential items in the form of a 'Craft Kit' and a 'Cookery Kit' the real fun starts with...

Time for tea jewellery, which is a cute selection of charm jewellery you can make out of miniature doll's house furniture and accessories, all with clear explanations. Next up is the handsome dandy white rabbit, complete with bow tie and pocket watch. The book then seamlessly leads the reader through a host of projects to decorate your home and garden, from fabric covered furniture, to Wonderland mobiles and lavender mice. All are interspersed with treats you can bake, like the heavenly lavender-scented Duchess Macaroons and Wonderland cookies, complete with how to make your own cookie cutters and decadent looking red velvet cupcakes. For Alice-inspired parties there are tea set invitations, chic Mad Hatter hats and playing card bunting to name a few. Each of the fifty projects are beautifully photographed and styled with accompanying easy to follow clear instructions and photographed instructions, including templates where necessary.

Everything Alice: the Wonderland Book of Makes is a super practical book brimming with highly effective ideas. At a recommended price of £14.99, I think this book is a must for crafters, bakers and lovers of quirky vintage who admire Alice!

Homespun style is a homely, crafty look that has been given a modern twist with bright colours, whimsical patterns and textural fabrics: an interior style that is unique to the individual creating it. But don't worry if painting or crafting is not your thing, Selina shares with you an abundance of great places to source one of a kind gems to create this look for yourself.

The book is split into three main chapters, starting with "Elements" of the look. In this chapter Selina covers homespun modern craft, how to use colour & pattern and how to customize & recycle. In Modern Craft she shows you some great ideas on storing all your craft needs in a creative, aesthetically pleasing way. Homespun Style by Selina Lake is an adorable hardback book full of bright and beautiful, unique, inspiring decorating ideas. At a recommended price of £19.99, I think this hardback book is a brilliant buy as it is has so many great tips and I can't stop pouring over the gorgeous photos!
